HIGHLIGHTS
After 17 days aboard the International Space Station, the (Ax-4) crew — Commander Peggy Whitson, Pilot Shubhanshu “Shux” Shukla, and Mission Specialists Sławosz “Suave” Uznański-Wiśniewski and Tibor Kapu — are nearing the completion of their research and preparing to undock no earlier than Monday, July 14 at 7:05 a.m. ET.
RESEARCH
Tibor continued his work on multiple experiments, including capturing imagery for the study, which investigates how space radiation impacts genetic stability, and harvesting samples for , a project growing nutrient-rich plants to support astronaut nutrition and sustainable agriculture on Earth.
During the Ax-4 mission, the crew tested Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) to verify their real-time accuracy in microgravity, which is an essential step toward enabling people with insulin-dependent diabetes to go to space. Efforts are also underway to understand how insulin behaves in space — the potency and stability of the drug will be assessed upon its return to Earth. The initiative is a significant step toward making spaceflight more accessible for those with historically disqualifying conditions.
In support of other human research studies, the crew contributed to the study, collecting data on how spaceflight affects eye movement and coordination when using computer screens. The crew further advanced the study, which explores how astronauts perceive and interact with their surroundings. In the study, they used virtual reality headsets and neural monitoring caps to assess how microgravity influences attention, motor skills, and stress responses. In addition, the astronauts supported the , gathering data on how clothing affects heat transfer in microgravity, with implications for both spacesuit design and thermal wear for extreme environments on Earth. They completed the final session of the project, which tracks astronauts’ mental and behavioral health through interviews, video diaries, and questionnaires before, during, and after the mission. Lastly, the crew participated in the study, evaluating how brain-training techniques might reduce stress and enhance performance in space.
